Masters Message

First off, I want to recognize Worshipful Brother Bruce Limke for his successful year in the east as Worshipful Master.  Bruce has led a very busy and successful year with 15 new Master Masons raised.  There were a lot of great social and community activities with Bruce frequently doing a lot of the cooking himself.  Clearly, I have my work cut out for me.

Well, I must say, installation was certainly quite a special experience.  I want to thank everyone for selecting me to occupy the east.  I hope to earn the confidence you’ve placed in me.

To me, Freemasonry is a never ending quest – a continual search for light, knowledge, and truth.  Freemasonry helped bring about enlightenment.  In an era of tyrannical kings, Freemasonry promoted the notion that all are equal, or on the level, with each other regardless of wealth, rank, or honors.  Freemasonry advocated the pursuit of knowledge and championed freedom of thought and freedom of speech contrary to the wishes of the ruling class.  You can see these principles woven into the tapestry of the founding documents of this country.    And because of these principles, Freemasonry was the enemy of dictators including Hitler, Mussolini, and Franco.  Freemasonry is an ideal to be continually sought after, and I believe that occupying the east is the continual endeavor to personify those principles which the Master’s station symbolizes.

I am so proud to be a member of Weston Lodge.  Membership is growing, and the growth is significant and strong.  The work is crisp, and the posting solid.  The new brothers are enthusiastic and engaged.  I have recently been reminded that Weston is the only lodge in Colorado with all three youth groups - DeMolay, Job’s Daughters, and Rainbow Girls.  In addition, we have Eastern Star, and on the York Rite side Royal Arch Masons and Council.  Think of how unique that makes us.  Think of how broad that makes our reach.  Think of how diverse that makes our resources.

So with that, I’d like to put forth a question to all of us.

What kind of good do you want to do?
What kind of fellowship do you want to have?

Sincerely and Fraternally,

Scott A. Bates
